I'm an Iowan by nature, and when Iowa became a daily fixture on the news, I was a little excited. Then I went home for the holidays and it was crazy! I've lived in Iowa my whole life and have never seen anything like it. Each of the major candidates came to either my hometown or one of the little towns nearby. Had I actually lived in Iowa at the time I could have seen each one. As it was, I didn't go to see Obama speak at our high school while I was home. I don't recall what I was doing, but I'll probably continue to kick myself for forgetting. Dad got a personal call from Hillary's campaign inviting him to one of her speeches, and it was the one that Bill and Chelsea were at too. I should have gone in his place, but I didn't think about it. But I've seen her before, years ago when she was First Lady. But we were inundated the entire time by calls and mailings, and the occasional door knocker. Each day, multiple solicitations. All by the Democrats, which tells me that one of us is a registered Dem. I'm an Independent, but I always vote Democrat, and so does my Mom. So maybe that's it. Dad never votes, so I'm not sure why Hillary's camp was calling him. Anyway, the Republicans knew better than to even bother with us.
The world was amazed when we caucused for Obama. Very few realize that Iowans are pretty open minded. We might be white, but we're not necessarily racist. Realize that I'm not speaking for all Iowans, there is racism everywhere, including the Hawkeye state. One thing that is almost universal is that we hate Bush. It's true. And yes, I said almost, so if you're a Repub, don't get your panties in a wad. However, I am surprised Edwards didn't do better. The Republican race was no surprise. No way is Iowa going to vote for a Mormon, we're not that open minded. I do not speak for all of us, I personally have no problems with the Latter Day Saints. I actually like Romney. But I guess Iowa has a history with Mormons, and people are still bugged by them. I think it's because they knock on your door at the worst times trying to convert us.
Anyway, I'm very interested to see how it all plays out. My boy Edwards should really just throw in the towel and hope for a VP nod. I'm hoping Hillary can stay up. Obama is a smooth talker, and that unnerves me. His speech at the '04 convention came along at the same time I was reading the "Left Behind" series, and I couldn't help notice similarities in the rise of Obama and the rise in the character that turned out to be the anti-Christ. Don't have a puppy, I am by no means calling Obama the devil, there are many distinct and important differences between the two, and I'm sure he's a good upstanding moral citizen. However, I can't get the similarities out of my mind. But if he's the Democratic candidate, you better believe I'm voting for him.
So I'm following the primary/caucus season with more interest than usual, because there's so much history happening here. It's very cool. It will be even cooler if my boy Edwards can pull out a surprise win in Michigan and Nevada. Then on to South Carolina! Then Florida! Then California and Texas and the whole Country! YeeeHawww!
